Overcrowded mouth: pull baby canine or use expander for 8 year old?

My 8 year old has an extra tooth on her upper jaw that needs to be removed.  Her top teeth are coming in crooked and look big.  One ortho recommended a palate expander and another recommended having baby canines pulled to make room.  My daughter sings and acts so I don't want to do anything that interferes with those interests too much.

If it was my kid, I'd first look at the expander and then see if extractions are needed. In many cases the extractions do solve the issues, but they are also 'final'.
